A Project a Long Time Coming

Awhile back, I think it was around Hannah’s birth in 2008, I started a project of digitizing our old photos and other memorabilia type things so that if we ever had a fire or theft, we would still have a copy of those items. I’m also not a hoarder/pack rat. If I’m not using something or able to display it for myself or others to enjoy it seems kinda useless to me, and I’m pretty grumpy about only seeing things when we move. Even though we had switched to a digital camera and had CDs of most of our film from about 2000 on, this whole process took me quite awhile since we had quite a bit of individual content from our pre-Nate and Becca days and we had lots of interruptions with our children and foster children and life and such. We both had the privilege of growing up in small communities where we could be involved in a large number of activities and athletic teams and be somewhat successful at a smaller number of them. Thus, there was a box of Becca’s school and activity things and a box of Nate’s school and activity things that also went through the scanner. I eventually decided to toss the physical copies of our photos and most of our school stuff, but found myself with a set of our awards (ribbons and medals and such) that I didn’t know what to do with. I didn’t want to toss them, but I also didn’t want to put them back in a (smaller) box to be thrown away by our children when we die. 😉
Light bulb moment: Our kids each have a quilt that Nate’s mom made for them and we started pinning their awards and other goodies on their quilts as a way of displaying them in their rooms, so eventually I thought of doing the same thing for us. I have a quilt that my mom made for me and Nate has a blanket that we had put his extra letter patches on (yes, he had more patches than there were room for on his letter jacket), so why not use those for our medals and ribbons too? Thus, we now have a Nate and Becca wall of fame! 🙂
Mine is pretty limited to high school and below. Even though I had some recognition in college and at work, there was nothing really tangible to display. Nate’s has more recent content. He gets a patch for each mission he helps work on (this is common in the space community) and he has also been collecting race medals from his crazy Spartan and Tough Mudder things he does. I’m just lazy. 😉 Click to enlarge or come visit!
