5th 6 Weeks of 2nd Grade

I’m a little behind on getting this written up. Hannah finished week 30 of her World History Part II a couple weeks ago. We are on track to finish at the end of August and start 3rd grade, American History I, in September. Yay!

During this section, Hannah memorized all of Psalm 121 and presented it to me at the end. We continue to read selections from the bible for her bible focus. She has a New Testament reading plan that she is supposed to be doing for Girl’s Ministries, so we have started to use that during our morning devotion time with the family.

In history/social studies, we did a brief overview of colonization of the world and the ensuing revolutions about the same time or as a result of the American and French Revolutions. We also studied the Industrial Revolution and how it impacted our world and culture. I feel like this section of history was kinda choppy, because we jumped all over the world, but I learned a lot and it gives us a bit of a structure on which to understand the backgrounds of some countries of the world besides the US. As part of our history studies, we also started a biography of Gladys Alyward and gained quite a bit of recent Chinese political history through her story. We also finished a section of Geography songs to memorize the states of the US. They were pretty fun.

Our weekly read alouds still include a selection of poems and Aesop’s fables. We also read A Little Princess, Pippi Longstocking, and Kildee House.

Hannah always does a great job reading to me. The books she read include Tippy Lemmey, A Question of Yams, and Third-Grade Detectives #4 and #10.
She does fairly well on her phonics, spelling, and vocabulary and usually surprises me with her creative writing assignments. Most weeks, she has a day to brainstorm based on a prompt and then the next day write the assignment. She likes ‘typing’ up her assignments on the Ipad and emails them to me.

Science saw us completing our unit on weather and doing a short solar system study (via the Magic Schoolbus).

In math, we took a break and worked on skills for this unit. She knows how to solve the simple math problems, but I wanted her to get the tables down a little better before we moved onto the next Horizons workbook.

For extra activities, we have a bit going on.
– We are very much enjoying piano lessons. Both of the older kids haven’t really ever been challenged before, so as this work is getting harder and they have to actually practice it, we’ve had to deal with some frustration and learn how to persevere and how it feels when you get something right after working hard for it. They do very nicely for our instructor and I hope that practice at home will get a little easier.
– Hannah really likes our time at Girl’s Ministries and is good friends with the girls in our group. We’ve had a few club activities and a few social times with them.
– We try to make it to the Waco waterpark, Hawaiian Falls, about once a week and if there is something fun going on at the children’s museum, we’ll do that too.
– We also still try to get outside often, though it is hard with it so hot. Usually once I can get them past the door and to a destination they don’t want to go home again. Just have to get over the hump!
– For 4th of July, we had some Aggie friends to the house and then spent some time in SA with grandparents and cousins.
