1st 6 Weeks of 3rd Grade

Woohoo! I think we’ve gotten a good feel for our workload each week and know where we can move things around for field trips and other life interruptions. Six weeks of American History done!

We are reading straight from the bible this year with some supplemental prayer guides. I still do our morning devotional readings so Hannah tends to read the bible sections to me during her school time. We’re currently working our way through Luke. She also spent this first unit memorizing Psalm 8.

In history/social studies, our first set of material is about the Incans, Aztecs, and Mayans and a little bit on the Native Americans. We’ve been reading some factual information on these civilizations with some historical fiction woven through that makes it more realistic. We have a fun poetry book that has an accompanying CD with the poems recited so we can listen to them together after reading about them.

So far, I’ve finished Secret of the Andes (about an Inca llama herder), Pedro’s Journal, and Walk the World’s Rim as a Read Alouds. While Hannah has read A Lion to Guard Us and Pocahontas and the Strangers as readers. We have the Disney Pocahontas movie to watch and compare sometime.

In Language Arts, we’re going to be working through Sequential Spelling for our spelling and Wordly Wise 1 for our vocabulary development. Sonlight provides some worksheets with a little bit of grammar and a writing assignment each week. The assignments are almost always paragraphs now. We’ve also moved into dictation instead of copywork which helps me see where she needs to be reminded of rules. Hannah gets to pick one assignment per week to do in cursive and she usually does her memory verse for that.

We did eventually get to start our 3rd grade science and have completed two weeks of it. We’re starting with biology and Hannah had fun making a model of a cell out of food parts. Before that, we finished up our Core C science a unit on dinosaurs and had a small section on the composition of the earth.

For math, we’re chugging along in Horizons 3. I’ve introduced some drills twice a week to help her get her facts down a little better for addition, subtraction, and multiplication. We’ve started to see a little bit of pre-division work in her worksheets so that is coming soon.

We have a lot of extra stuff going on to keep us from getting bored. We have piano lesson once a week which is what Hannah chose for her extracurricular. She is starting to learn chords and is amazing us with her ability to pick it up. We have a weekly park meetup and have also been having fairly regular outings with our homeschool group. We met at Jump N Place (for some bouncie fun), Robinson Farm, and the county fair. We still really enjoy our Girl’s Ministry (like Girl Scouts) time once a week as well as extras. We had a district campout with other girl’s clubs in our district and a couple weeks ago we did a service project. Whenever we don’t have anywhere to go, we love to play outside and explore our creek.
