Last week Benjamin finished up his 12th week of 1st grade. We’re really zooming through it. It sure is fun when Hannah comes along and says “Oooh, I like that book!” It gets Ben excited to listen.<\/p>\n

Bible \u2013 I still really enjoy the Leading Little Ones to God<\/u> devotional. Sometimes, I edit a little or add some of our theology to the point that is being made, but its a great resource. Benjamin also does fairly well with his scripture memory each week. <\/p>\n

In history\/social studies, we have a weekly reading about a culture that doesn’t have a bible and this past unit we’ve been following along with an outreach Sonlight is doing with KidsDiscover to raise money for bible translation. We are working through a book called Missionary Stories with the Millers<\/u> which is enjoyable shorts about missionaries around the world. For history, we continued our study of ancient civilizations by finishing up Egypt and reading a book called Tut’s Mummy: Lost and Found<\/u>, then moving on to Crete and Babylonia and the earliest civilization we know about in India.<\/p>\n

I had fun with our read alounds this unit. We had Little Pear<\/u>, selections from Mrs. Piggle Wiggle<\/u>, Owls in the Family<\/u>, and Ben’s favorite Henry Huggins<\/u>. We also have short weekly readings from Favorite Poems of Childhood<\/u> and Mother Goose rhymes. <\/p>\n

Our language studies are pretty good. He does well with spelling and usually enjoys his phonics worksheets. He also does well with his reading comprehension. He does one assignment in cursive so he doesn’t forget how to write it. And one weekly assignment on vocabulary. He doesn’t love writing, but if I write for him sometimes, he will come up with good creative assignment answers. Most of his readings are from The Beginner’s Bible<\/u> but he also read a poetry book called Surprises<\/u> and Pompeii…Buried Alive!<\/u>.<\/p>\n

Our science study follows The Usborne World of Animals<\/u> and doubles as a geography study as we learn about animals in different regions of the world. It’s a great book! We also have a weekly reading from See How It’s Made<\/u> and a weekly experiment\/reading. This unit was on magnets. <\/p>\n

Benjamin is pretty good at math. He gets new concepts quickly. We’re in Horizons 2 and he gets to play math games on the Ipad once or twice a week. <\/p>\n

Extras keep us busy. He doesn’t love piano like Hannah, but he still does well with it. We may try something new next semester for him. He does love Royal Rangers, maybe because Daddy is his teacher or maybe because he’s pretty social and likes to see his friends. We also enjoy our weekly park play dates and our other outings with our homeschool group.
