Hannah finished her Core D work a few weeks ago, but we’ve been busy doing camps and vacations so I’m just getting around to writing it up.

For bible we continued with her Girl’s Ministry readings and some daily readings from The Discover’s Bible. She finished out the year memorizing most of 1 Samuel 17 – David and Goliath.

In history/social studies, we closed out all of our spines – American Indian Prayer Guide, first half of Children’s Encyclopedia of American History, American Adventures, Landmark History of the American People, Vol 1 and read The Erie Canal.

Read Alouds we longer so we only had two: The Journeyman and Swift Rivers. We also finished A Child’s Introduction to Poetry.

In Reading / LA, we finished up Sequential Spelling 1 and Wordly Wise 1. We continued with longer cursive and creative writing assignments. Her assigned readers were Robert Fulton, Boy Craftsman and Sarah, Plain and Tall. She had asked to read for time instead of book length so she also finished Sticks Across the Chimney, Good Masters, Sweet Ladies, Philomena and Sir Lancelot the Great.

We are not done with Science D. We will continue to work through it this summer. She read Listening to Crickets, Magic School Bus: Inside the Human Body, and selections from Real Science for Kids Biology and Mysteries and Marvels of Nature. We worked through the TOPS: Corn and Beans book for our experiments.

I think she got bored playing math apps so she had requested to go ahead and start Horizons 4. By the time I got it ordered we were done with the year, but will probably do some of this over the summer to stay sharp. During “math” time, we also trade off with keyboarding.

We love our extra activities. Weekly piano, Park Day, and Girl’s Ministries activities. During this unit we saw a children’s production of Seussical the Musical and toured the Speed exhibit at the Mayborn. We had a visit from the Schader family as well as a Bandera and San Antonio trip. Hannah had really enjoyed her first volleyball season so she went to a week of volleyball camp in June and is signed up to play in the league again in the fall.

Overall, this core was a nice surprise. Even though we zoomed in on the United States, it kept some world view in there which I appreciated. A lot of the books, I probably would never have read myself and they turned out to be great reads. Woohoo, on to US History II in the fall!
