Week 30 Down

We finished week 30 before our trip to Alaska so we have four weeks left to wrap up Benjamin’s 2nd grade year.

In bible we have been through selections of Proverbs, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, Jonah, Daniel, and Esther as well as our memorization passages.

In history/social studies, our spines are Child’s History of the World and Usborne Book of World History. We’re getting closer to recent history and Hannah and Benjamin are converging as she finishing American History and he finishes world history. So we find ourselves discussing the same things a couple weeks apart. We use Window on the World for cultural studies. I heard recently there is going to be a new version of this book which would be really great to have more up to date info on some of the countries. Geography Songs for geography and we enjoy doing our timeline at the end of each week. We also read Gladys Aylward.

Read Alouds have been fun. We did White Stallion of Lipizza, About Average, and The Penderwicks. Also weekly selections from Aesop for Children and Cornstalks:A Bushel of Poems.

Ben is a pretty good speller but really doesn’t like doing writing so he tries to do the minimum on all his assignments. But when I can get him to try, he does pretty good. We have weekly spelling lists, grammar in Phonics C, a cursive assignment, and vocabulary in Wordly Wise B.

Benjamin has been reading faster than his assignments so we’ve been filling in between books with others off of our shelfs. The assigned ones for this unit were Tippy Lemmey, A Question of Yams, Third Grade Detectives #4, and Third Grade Detectives #10.

We’ve been barely managing to stay on top of science. We’ve been in a weather unit and then moved into electricity. Books included Weather, Discover and Do Level 2, Science Activities, Vol 3, and Usborne Book of Knowledge.

For math, we’ve been just starting multiplication. Benjamin likes figuring math out and usually does well. We are about halfway through Horizons 3.

Extras, of course, are the best part of school. We have weekly piano, Royal Rangers, and Park day. We had our Royal Ranger District PowWow where Benjamin won third place with his Lego Derby Car, we got to go to cousin Brendan’s graduation, and Benjamin got baptized. Great six weeks!
