The 2nd 6 weeks always takes longer due to additional schedule constraints and trips. We just roll the days over into the next week as needed and keep trucking along on days we can. Joel continues to do well and most days is finished a little after lunch. 12 weeks down!
For bible, we do family devotions after breakfast, a few minutes of journaling, and prayer. Joel is reading a devotional book called Starting Strong for school this unit as well as a daily selection of scripture and memorizing a passage each week.
As usual, continuing with our spines as our primary teaching books: The Landmark History of the American People, Vol 2 and The Children’s Encyclopedia of American History. We are listening to or reading through some patriotic songs each week in Wee Sing America. We also do a timeline activity and current events each week.
Read alouds during this unit were Across Five Aprils, Caddie Woodlawn, and The Great Wheel. We started Little Britches. We also have a couple of poems a week from How to Eat a Poem.
Joel does well in math. We are working through Horizons 5 and using Prodigy for supplement.
In Language, we have spelling with Sequential Spelling 2, a cursive assignment each week, vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000, Book 5, and a creative assignment each week. This unit Joel read Turn Homeward, Hannalee, Shades of Gray, Sing Down the Moon, and Old Yeller.
Our main book in science is How to be Good at Science, Technology and Engineering with selections from National Geographic: How Things Work and our experiment book Discover and Do: Level E. We also read a book called Water.
So many extras this unit. . . Joel’s regular activities are children’s class on Tuesdays, Rangers on Wednesdays, and he plays the drums for church every other week. He completed orienteering and first aid with kids and got to go on two campouts with Rangers. On top of normal, we had quite a few additional fun activities. We had the end of the volleyball season which included games for Hannah and Ginny, the varsity tournament and a stay at Great Wolf Lodge, and visits from Gram as well as Diltz grandparents, and Hannah’s senior night. Dad took Joel and Ginny to the Founder’s Day carnival for some rides. The church had three days of VBS because of school holidays. Joel is at the top of the age range so he gets to be a team leader. We had a family trip to Marble Falls for Becca’s birthday and a trip to Kerrville to watch Lilly play volleyball. Joel also got to participate in Good News Club at the elementary on a few Tuesdays. The church and Connections had a few fall themed activities and Joel enjoyed playing the pie face game. We had a trip to Minnesota for cousin Morgan’s wedding, the Coopers were in town for a few days, and the Millers came up for a softball tournament. Whew, no wonder it took us a little longer to get 6 weeks. 🙂
