4th 6 Weeks of 5th Grade

24 weeks down. Chugging along. We pretty much know what to expect from all of our subjects and just have to get them done each day. Joel likes to try to be done before lunch and sometimes succeeds.

For bible, we do family devotions first in the morning, a few minutes of journaling, and prayer. Joel has a daily selection of scripture and has been memorizing a speech.

As usual, continuing with our spines as our primary teaching books: The Landmark History of the American People, Vol 2 and The Children’s Encyclopedia of American History. We are getting some patriotic songs each week in Wee Sing America. We continued with The World Wars as well. We also do a timeline activity and current events each week.

We finished Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, and read King of the Mound and The Winged Watchman for read alouds during this unit. We also have a couple of poems a week from How to Eat a Poem.

Joel does well in math. We are in the second half of Horizons 5 and using Prodigy for supplement.

In Language not much changes, we have spelling with Sequential Spelling 2, a cursive assignment each week, vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000, Book 5, and a creative assignment each week. This unit Joel finished George Washington Carver and read Thimble Summer and Gone Away Lake.

Our main book in science is How to be Good at Science, Technology and Engineering with selections from National Geographic: How Things Work and our experiment book Discover and Do: Level E. This unit we also starting having selections from The Usborne Book of Astronomy and Space.

Extras! Joel has children’s class and Good News Club on Tuesdays, Royal Rangers on Wednesdays, and plays drums every other Sunday. He still wants to come to Parents’ Night Out at Connections and has even been known to be a helper for a party or two. He was also a helper at two VBS Day camps by putting together the snacks and being a good example for the younger kids. This unit we had a few snow days and Joel had fun while that lasted. He got to go to a good number of Benjamin’s basketball games as well as play a few of his own. He had to play up to 6th grade so he’ll get to have another season at that level next year. We had the February birthdays; Nate, Hannah, Lilly, and Joel. We had a trip to San Antonio so Joel could go ice skating and see the family. When we aren’t running around for church or basketball, Joel likes to talk to Copilot and play video games.
