5th 6 Weeks of 5th Grade

We finished up week 30 at the end of April. May was just a busy month so I’m just now updating about it and we didn’t get a lot of school done either. 6 weeks left, we should finish sometime in July.

For bible, we do family devotions first in the morning, a few minutes of journaling, and prayer. Joel has a daily selection of scripture and a weekly scripture verse or two to memorize and recite.

As usual, continuing with our spines as our primary teaching books: The Landmark History of the American People, Vol 2 and The Children’s Encyclopedia of American History. We are getting some patriotic songs each week in Wee Sing America. We also do a timeline activity and current events each week.

We finished Miracles on Maple Hill, In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson, and General Butterfingers for read alouds during this unit. We supplement with a couple of poems a week from How to Eat a Poem.

Joel continues to do well in math. We are in the second half of Horizons 5 and using Prodigy for supplement.

In Language not much changes week to week, we have spelling with Sequential Spelling 2, a cursive assignment each week, vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000, Book 5, and a creative assignment each week. This unit Joel finished The Seventeenth Swap, Plain Girl, and Henry Reed, Inc for readers.

Our main book in science is How to be Good at Science, Technology and Engineering with selections from National Geographic: How Things Work and our experiment book Discover and Do: Level E. This unit we also wrapped up The Usborne Book of Astronomy and Space.

We had a lot of Hannah related activities filling up our days this spring, but Joel still had a lot of fun. His main extras are children’s class on Tuesdays and Rangers on Wednesdays. He plays drums every other week at church and helps with other church events as well. In March and April we had a Bible Blitz, park worship with baptisms, and two day camps. This unit we had a trip to CP/Bandera on Easter weekend to see the family. He gets done with school around lunch time most days and then gets to play on his devices or outside until we head off to whatever event we have that day. We try to let the kids find water whever it is available and we’ve had a wet spring so the creek has been fun. We also got a couple new chickens that just started laying, pretty eggs!
