We are calling this Ginny’s 9th grade year. She is doing Core J which is the History of Science and all of her readers are science fiction. It is a pretty fun year but gives a little gap year before the high school cores which she will start next year. We have also added in some medication to help with focus and Ginny says it is making a difference.
Ginny’s subjects this year are Core J History of Science, LAJ, SciJ History of Science, MUS PreAlgebra, and Volleyball
Bible hasn’t changed much. Ginny follows along with our church in our reading plan or we will do the daily scripture in YouVersion as a family. She is reading Disappointment With God for theology this unit. She has school memory work each week.
In history/social studies, we are working through a series called The Story of Science as our spines. The first one is Aristotle Leads the Way. Ginny also read String, Straightedge, and Shadow and Archimedes and the Door of Science. She still does timeline and current events on Fridays.
Nate has been doing Ginny’s read alouds with her as well and they read Holes, The Watsons Go to Birmingham, and Mister Max Book of Lost Things.
The science fiction readers are a break from the heavy science history books we read. So far Ginny has read The Thief, Going Solo, and The Gammage Cup. She has National Geographic Book of Nature Poetry for some poetry selections each week as well.
Math is Math U See Pre Algebra. Ginny was struggling with the Horizons curriculum last year so we switched to MUS and it seems like she is doing well so far. It is almost all review since we decided to go through Pre Algebra again instead of moving on to Algebra.
LA is same as last year just a level up. Sequential Spelling 5 for spelling, Classical Roots A for Latin, Wordly Wise Book 8 for vocabulary. A weekly creative writing assignment. Ginny got to make a marketing flyer for one of the books she read which was a little more creative than just a writing block.
Science is built into her reading and history but she still has an experiment each week. She usually needs a little help with these and Nate ends up being her lab assistant. She has been doing some simple tool experiments, she liked making a water wheel and a little cardboard car.
Ginny’s main extra right now is volleyball. She is on the JV White team which is mostly freshmen, she plays middle hitter but is still pretty timid. We didn’t have a coach at first so I helped out and Hannah helped until she started school and then her coach from last year stepped in to help so Ginny was happy about that. Practices 2 or 3 days a week and games kept us busy. She also goes to youth at church when she can and Girl’s Ministry on Wednesdays. Most days she had to go straight from school to volleyball so not a lot of down time but she still finds time to be on her phone with friends.
During this unit we went to 6 Flags with Hannah and then moved her to college and attended Hannah’s Girl’s Ministry celebration. Ginny attended Call Rally with our youth and WFA and we also had a glow party to kick off the school year. She also got to go to a baby shower for a friend at church. She is starting to want to do more social things. 🙂
