Coach Becca

A couple weeks ago a friend of mine from church sent me a text asking if I was interested or if I knew anyone who might want to coach Jr Hi volleyball. The school down the road just found out that the coach (and teacher) they had lined up wasn’t going to be coming back and school was starting in a couple weeks and they didn’t have anyone else who could do it. So I went to a meeting to talk to the athletic director to see what it was all about. I’ve never coached anything but out of all the sports, I probably have the most knowledge of volleyball. With the girls leaving and us not planning on getting any more fosters until after the baby, it sounded like something fun to try. Since I already have a fingerprint card from our foster care licensing, getting cleared through the school HR was smooth and easy and I’m now officially the ‘coach’.

We were supposed to start tryouts last week but had multiple heat advisory days so canceled until this week. Monday and Tuesday this week became the official tryouts with yesterday being the main scoring day. Due to travel arrangements for any long drives, we had to cut the team to 13. I originally had 23 girls on the list, but lost a couple to injuries and others changed their minds. So we ended up with 18 trying out and having to cut 5. This was one of the most stressful things I’ve ever done. I decided since its Jr Hi and most of the girls didn’t have prior playing experience that I would score mainly on skill percentages (serves out of 10, passing to a target, setting, etc). I tried to keep notes of any positives or negatives I noticed in the girls’ personalities, but in the end, the skill points made it easy to make the cut.

Starting today, I’ve got a team of 13 to whip into shape before our first game in two weeks! : )
Cidny
Aundria
Shelbie
Samantha
Kenzee
Macy
Cameron
Emily
Kenzie
Samantha
Megan
Bailee
Abbi

Please pray for us (especially in the heat). I hope I do a good job and I hope I can do more than just coach volleyball to these girls. I’m looking forward to watching them grow. . .
