Finished 5th Grade

Joel finished up 5th grade on July 3rd. He had a few days off, then went to Camporama for a week, then had a few more days off. And we’ll be starting up 6th grade the last week of July because all the sports are starting then. The photo above shows Joel’s 3 favorite books from this year.

For bible, we had family devotions first in the morning, a few minutes of journaling, and prayer. Joel had a daily selection of scripture and a weekly scripture verse or two to memorize and recite. He usually does a good job on his memory work.

In our History section, we read missionary books called In Search of the Source and Lights in a Dark Place this unit. We supplemented with readings from The Children’s Encyclopedia of American History to wrap history things up in the early 2000s. We are getting some patriotic songs each week in Wee Sing America. We also do a timeline activity and current events each week.

Read alouds this unit were A Summer of Sundays and Every Soul a Star. We supplement with a couple of poems a week from How to Eat a Poem.

Joel continues to do well in math. He finished Horizons 5 and uses Prodigy for supplement.

In Language not much changes week to week, we finished spelling with Sequential Spelling 2, a cursive assignment each week, vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000, Book 5, and a creative assignment each week. Readers this unit were Bruchko, From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basel E. Frankweiler, and Because of Winn Dixie.

Our main book in science is How to be Good at Science, Technology and Engineering with selections from National Geographic: How Things Work and our experiment book Discover and Do: Level E. This unit we also wrapped up Water and Listening to Crickets.

This last unit of school took a long time because we had lots of distractions due to Hannah graduating and other friends also celebrating. Two graduations, a graduation party, and a senior trip to St Louis on the Amtrak train were some of the highlights. We had most of the Moehring family in Waco for a gathering to celebrate Gram’s 85th birthday. Joel got to participate in his first TX Wind sports banquet and his last year to be in kids camp at our District conference. He went to visit Gram and help her burn her brush piles, got to go to the zoo with friends, and also attended an outreach event with us at one of the World Cup games in Dallas.

Joel’s regular extra activities include Royal Rangers on Wednesdays, Children’s class on Tuesdays, and playing drums every other week or so at church. He still enjoys going to Parents’ Night Out at Connections and asks each week if we are having it or not. He spends most of his down time on video games, but does go outside some to play with the punching bag or shoot some hoops.
