A Map Quilt

I saw a post that used this material from Joann’s to make a quilt. . . so I decided to try it.

This is the finished product. I tried to get Hannah to help me. She liked filling up the bobbins, but wasn’t quite big enough to push the foot pedal and hold onto / control the material as it went through the machine. So she got bored pretty quick after we did a couple lines. It was more difficult than I thought it would be to stay on the lines, but I did a pretty good job. I didn’t know how to do the binding (edge) of a quilt so had to look that up. I only put a couple of seams on inside out (which is pretty normal for me) and I’m pretty impressed that it looks as good as it does. 🙂 We’ll see how it holds up to being used as our world map for schooling stuff.

Lessons learned:
– Put seams on the right direction.
– Pin more.
– Buy more thread (I ran out)
– I did the outside edge first, which was a bad idea because it allowed the material to bunch a little bit. If I would have worked from one side to the other, I would have had less bunching.
– Watch for coupons/sales. I spent about $25 and could have got it for a bit less if I had been patient.
– Nate learned that when I say “I’m going to Joann’s.” to say “No.” 😉

  1. See, you need to learn how to use a sewing machine . . . apparently they have a US pattern too. I might have to go look for it.

  2. Suggestion for next time: If you start quilting from the middle and then move out from there, you won’t get any bunching and it won’t slide to one side. Tip courtesy of my talented grandmother. 🙂

  3. Very cool! Another tip for next time: Joann’s has a phone app that almost always has a 40% off coupon. You can also use Michael’s and Hobby Lobby coupons there, all at the same time.
