12 Weeks of 3rd Grade

We finished up our second 6 weeks of school last week. We’re starting to get into a good routine now that the expectation level is better understood.

For Bible we continue doing reading with Hannah for her New Testament requirements. For school we have selections from the Old Testament and a weekly memory verse.

In history/social studies, we have a weekly reading from American Indian Prayer Guide. In this unit, we finished up our studies of the Central American natives in Incans, Aztecs, and Mayans. We started in on the early European explorations of North American in our three spines: Children’s Encyclopedia of American History, The Beginner’s American History, and Landmark History of the American People.

Read Alouds have been fun. We finished up The Witch of Blackbird Pond and Sign of the Beaver. We also have a weekly reading and listening assignment from A Child’s Introduction to Poetry.

The routine is most noticeable in language arts as Benjamin doesn’t really like writing very much. He has had to redo a couple of assignments and I think has realized that it is easier to do it nicely the first time. We have spelling with Sequential Spelling I, a weekly cursive assignment, vocabulary with Wordly Wise, and a weekly Creative Writing assignment.

The readers that Ben has read to himself this unit are Squanto, The Thanksgiving Story, The Courage of Sarah Noble, and The Skippack School.

Science has been fun since we’ve been in an underwater creature unit and Benjamin is pretty fascinated with the topic. The books have been Mysteries and Marvels of Nature and First Encyclopedia of Seas and Oceans. And we have a fun video called Incredible Creatures that Defy Evolution.

Math continues pretty well in Horizons 3. We’ve moved into some long division.

Extras include piano practice, park days, Royal Rangers, and some educational apps. Ben had winter camp for Rangers before Thanksgiving. We had fun family times and his birthday party that week also. We participated in our homeschool group history fair and parent’s night out. He has been very excited about receiving what he wanted for his birthday, the starter kit for a card and dice game called Star Wars Destiny. You can buy boosters to increase your deck’s abilities. So he has been playing lots of this game together and with friends in his free time.
