Halfway through 6th Grade

Hannah finished up week 18 right before we had the crazy whirlwind of Grandpa’s funeral so I’m just catching up on paperwork.

Bible: We are still working through the whole bible for her Girl’s Ministry requirement. She has selected readings for school and a scripture or poetry memorization assignment each week. We are also working through The Children’s Bible Field Guide with lots of info.

History/social studies:
We finished up the section on the ancient world with two books: August Ceasar’s World and The Story of the World: Ancient Times. Then we dove right into the middle ages. We have two main spines: The Story of the World: Middle Ages and Usborne Encyclopedia of World History. We also do current events each week and put events on our timeline book.

<- Hannah has been enjoying trying out new earrings since she got her ears pierced in August!

Read Alouds:
We read a little about England during the Roman times in The Silver Branch. We very much enjoyed Phantom Tollbooth. And we learned a lot about St. Patrick in Flame Over Tara. We also have weekly readings from Favorite Poems Old and New.

Reading / LA:
We are in a pretty good groove now with the flow of our weeks. We have spelling with Sequential Spelling 3, cursive assignment, grammar with Keys to Good Language, vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000, Book 6, a creative assignment, and dictation each week. Hannah also read two books to herself: The Bronze Bow and Ides of April.

Science:
We often times crunch science in at the last minute or have to wait until the weekend for experiments because the teacher doesn’t have the correct supplies, but we still get it done. She has been continuing with What’s Science All About? as her main text and Chemically Active for some interesting chemical experiments.

Math:
We are finishing up Horizons 5 and will jump right into 6 when we get there.

Extras:
We try to stay on top of piano and  Duolingo as assigned extras and we have weekly Girl’s Ministries club. Hannah is continuing to write original songs and compose piano music to go with them which is so fun to watch and hear. Hannah has been doing voice lessons until we start up volleyball again. We also have a standing playdate with a buddy each week. During this unit we had the holidays so we celebrated Thanksgiving with Diltz and Moehring family as well as Christmas and we spent New Year’s week in Colorado. Hannah got to have fun sledding as well as one day of skiing.
