4th 6 Weeks of 6th Grade

We finished up week 24 right before the lock down. I just haven’t had time to collect my thoughts about how we did until now.

In bible, we have ditched the Sonlight schedule in order to get Hannah’s bible reading requirement for Girl’s Ministries completed. Benjamin and Joel join us. Hannah has also worked on a poem instead of scripture for her memory this unit. We have a devotional called Children’s Bible Field Guide that we read weekly as well.

In history/social studies, we continued with the middle ages. Our spines are The Story of the World: The Middle Ages and The Usborne Encyclopedia of World History. We also do a current events assignment with the World Teen subscription.

Read Alouds during this unit were A Single Shard, The Hidden Treasure of Glaston. We read daily selections of poetry from Favorite Poems Old and New.

Reading / LA is in a good routine. We have spelling in Sequential Spelling 3, a weekly cursive assignment, grammar in Keys to Good Language, and vocabulary in Wordly Wise 3000, Book 6, as well as a weekly creative assignment. Hannah read Black Horses for the KingSon of CharlemagneA Proud Taste for Scarlet and Miniver to herself. These were some really nice historical fiction pieces for the middle ages, but so many characters to keep track of that it was a little confusing at times.

Science has been ok. We have done well with the reading assignments but have been failing as the weekly experiements. We don’t like the book very much. Maybe when Ben gets to Science G, we will all work together to try to do better. Our spine is What’s Science All About? and Chemically Active for the experiements. We also had a few readings from Usborne Encyclopedia of Planet Earth.

Math is working through Horizons 5 still. We have moved into longer division and fractions. While not her favorite subject, we seem to be at a good place with math lately.

Extras include continuing to practice piano. Hannah loves composing and writing songs and we enjoy hearing her creations. I’m glad that she can sing them at church. We use Duolingo for language. Hannah finished up her voice lessons as we were going to start up volleyball again for the spring season. We had a few big family activities this unit. We traveled to Minnesota for great grandpa Dale’s funeral, Joel had his 5th bday party, and most of our free time was taken up with visits with sister.
