5th 6 Weeks of 6th Grade

Only 6 weeks left for Ben to finish Core G! We have a few weeks off in the summer for various things but he should be finished by the end of July.

For devotions, we are following along with our church and studying The Story. Benjamin also has a school reading each day, a weekly chapter from International Children’s Bible Field Guide, a weekly memory verse, and we sometimes remember to check our timeline book.

In history/social studies, The Story of the World: The Middle Ages is our spine. Benjamin does a current event assignment on Fridays with World Kids magazine.

Read Alouds have been interesting. We finished The Great and Terrible Quest, read The Second Mrs. Giaconda, and The Shakespeare Stealer. We started I Juan de Pareja. Our poetry book selections come from Favorite Poems Old and New

In language, he moved into the next spelling book Sequential Spelling 4, grammar with Keys to Good Language 6, vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000, Book 6, a cursive assignment, and a creative assignment each week. He isn’t very good at grammar and doesn’t like to write, but after a little bit of pressure he usually turns in something acceptable.

Benjamin’s readers during this unit were Adam of the RoadCatherine Called Birdy, and he started The Beduins’ Gazelle.

Our science main spine was The Usborne Encyclopedia of Planet Earth which we finished up. Then we started Evolution: The Grand Experiment and he watched a DVD called Icons of Evolution. We use Chemically Active for our experiment book.

Math is Horizons 6. We are moving along pretty well.

Benjamin’s extras are twice a week karate and Royal Rangers on Wednesdays. He is working one night a week at Connections to do random chores and is enjoying having a little bit of spending money. He is also very helpful as our tech man for church things. During this unit, we saw the grandparents at Ginny’s graduation and again at Ginny’s birthday gathering along with Millers and Moehring uncles. Benjamin went to Bandera to help with a clean up at Gram’s house and helped run a garage sale. We had a RR campout, awards ceremony, and fundraiser. This time around, Benjamin was able to help prep the meat and see all the work it takes to do the BBQ. All the kids also belt tested and promoted to green belt.
