Finished with 9th Grade

She did it! Done with 9th grade and I learned a lot too. First year keeping a grade book and making a transcript. We have spent a little time trying to map out the rest of her high school semesters taking into account dual credit at MCC and we think we have a plan that will help her get where she wants to go.

Hannah’s devotional was Bible Study Sampler. She worked on it independently. She has also finished The Bible Jesus Read. She had weekly scripture memory for school and also for youth and she read along with our church’s year long bible reading plan. For the last little unit she worked through a book called Dating with Integrity.

In history/social studies, she finished most of the 9th book in the History of US series. It got too close to current events and the author leaned a little bit politically. Sonlight has updated this core with a new spine so I need to decide if I’m going to upgrade for Ben or have him read the same series. Hannah also read Farewell to Manzanar, Freedom Walkers, and The Cross and the Switchblade. She had a weekly current events assignment from World Teen magazine.

Language was pretty much the same each week with different creative prompts. She finished spelling with Sequential Spelling Book 6 and moved into Book 7. She also finished vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000 Book 9. She wrapped up her a Latin study called Vocabulary with Classic Roots and an SAT prep workbook called Analogies IShe also had some SAT essay prep this year which I feel was good for her test taking skills.

Hannah’s reading books included Maniac McGee, Rip Van Winkle, Dear Mr. Henshaw, Rules of the Road, A Wrinkle in Time, When You Reach Me, and The View from Saturday. Her poetry book was A Treasury of Poetry for Young People.

Science was Apologia Physical Science. I appreciated the student notebook because I think it gave her a good foundation on what type of things to take notes about.

Hannah’s math text was Math U See Algebra I. It had an instructional video for each lesson and then she did the practice work and took a test. Even though she doesn’t like math she managed to make an A in this class and will go on into Geometry in the fall.

Extras: Hannah wanted to try to get a summer job but couldn’t find anyone hiring at 15. I think it ended up working out ok because she just finished official schoolwork and will be starting volleyball at the beginning of August. Not much of a summer break for her. She can try next year. She does babysit weekly for a little guy and picks up other jobs every now and then. She isn’t hurting for spending cash. She continues to do an excellent job leading worship every other month and leading our prayer service each week. Connections has been in summer mode with a trip to the pool almost every weekday and games and movies and crafts fairly often. She has also attended the teen time at the library and joined a book club. We had District Council in June with Hannah attending PK Retreat, she participated in our youth group invitational event, and also attended youth camp in July. We had a family trip to Nashville to visit cousins and she has been doing more driving when we have the chance. She is very excited to turn 16 but will have to wait a little longer!

Mom and Dad have been busy helping at the fireworks stand (Hannah helped too) and turning over two rental houses (Hannah helped too). It is nice to have extra hands when we need them. All in all a great 9th grade year and looking forward to seeing how she grows as a sophomore.
