1st 6 Weeks of 6th Grade

Ginny is doing pretty well this year. She has also finished her first 6 weeks.

Her 6th grade schedule is: Core F Eastern Hemisphere, LAF, Sci F Health and Anatomy, Horizons 5, and Volleyball

Ginny participates in our family devotions, has school bible passages and memory work, and is also trying to complete her Girl’s Ministry Stars curriculum. She just has a few more merits to finish with honors. She also has a children’s class on Tuesdays that she has memory work for. We’ve been reading through The Case for a Creator for Kids

In history/social studies, this year is all about the Far East. We wrapped up a unit on China and started on Korea. Our spine is Journey to the Eastern Hemisphere. She has corresponding notebooking pages to help her remember the content she is learning. They include a map and timeline and other facts for each country. We also read selections from a book called 100 Gateway Cities. During this unit she studied a missionary in God’s Adventurer Hudson Taylor. She has a timeline and current events assignment at the end of each week.

Read Alouds are a bit longer and have lots of cultural references so sometimes it is hard for her to follow. But we are learning a lot. We read Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze. We also have All the Small Poems as our poetry collection for this year.

Ginny had a little bit of Horizons 4 to finish up and we moved straight into Horizons 5. The first set of lessons is review so we are making sure we don’t have any more gaps before adding new skills.

In LA we have a weekly cursive assignment, spelling with Sequential Spelling 1, grammar with Keys to Good Language 6, and vocabulary with Wordly Wise 3000 Book 5. Each week we have a writing assignment and this year is where we really get into the plan, research, draft, revise, finalize steps. Ginny read Li Lun Lad of CourageMission to Cathay, The Year of the Dog, The Kite Fighters, and Sweet and Sour – Tales From China

Science is human anatomy so no experiments but lots of vocabulary. Learning all the body systems and how things work. Our spines are The Usborne Complete Book of Human Body and Blood and Guts. Every now and then we have a selection from Food and Nutrition for Every Kid

In the spring we learned that Ginny only has one kidney. This puts her at risk for the higher contact sports, but she was cleared to try volleyball this fall. She missed out on the community center level sports due to COVID so this was really her first stab at competitive sports. She has made a lot of progress so far and will have two more years at the jr hi level to improve. Other than school and volleyball we mostly spend our free time at Connections and church doing the various activities connected with those.
